I’ve been helping my wife grow her bakery business, and one thing I’ve noticed is just how different the economics of a physical business can be from those of software.

Both are great businesses, but software has an incredible level of scalability. A bakery needs ingredients, equipment, space, people, and physical operations to grow. Software, on the other hand, can potentially serve thousands or even millions of customers without the same proportional increase in cost, and it can cross borders almost effortlessly.

At the same time, I’ve come to realize that software is not necessarily easier just because the barrier to entry seems low. In fact, it may require more intellectual effort, patience, and, perhaps most importantly, the right strategy. It is relatively easy to build software today, but building something people actually want, will pay for, and that can grow sustainably is a completely different challenge.

Both types of businesses create real value. But software has a uniquely high potential value because of its scalability, especially in a world where so much money and economic activity now happens digitally.
