After the announcement of GPT-6 Astra, AI has become so capable that I’m not even sure whether these models are still based on traditional Transformer architectures, MoE, or something completely different. And as more of these systems become closed-source, how would we even know?

That said, I think things will become much cheaper and more understandable to everyone 30 years from now. Big computers were already around roughly 30 years before Apple was founded, and Steve Wozniak was able to build his own by tinkering, experimenting, and using cheaper components to recreate features that already existed in computers at the time.

In a way, it was reverse engineering through a completely different approach. So who knows? Maybe something similar will happen with AI. Even if the most advanced models remain closed-source, people might find other ways to understand, reproduce, or build around them. That could give us an entirely different way of looking at AI.
